how am i so lucky to have not one, but two crazy talented sisters? i haven't been the most stellar big sister, not always realizing and celebrating the gifts and abilities that my sisters have. sorry for that. but, now i am making up for lost time, i guess :)
here's a sneak peak at the amazingly, adorable gifts my sister liz made for her little sobrino/a. she even made sure everything was gender neutral since we have wanted to keep the gender of bambino/a a surprise to everyone... even us! sorry for the sub-par pictures, they definitely do not do her handiwork justice. here goes. and yes, she is "for hire". :)
hand-painted and stenciled onsies
one in a million toys: ribbon blanket and rattle
the boppy cover
baby bloomers
more baby bloomers
a baby burrito bag

thanks larm! i am so sure bambino will love all of his/her stylish clothes... keep up the good work!

my crazy talented sister
which one? great question... for this post i am going to showcase the amazing talent of my sister Joey. (you're welcome sister) :) dancer, performer, writer, creator... to name a few talents. but the talent i have personally benefited the most from is her skill in photography. she graciously took jason and my unofficial engagement pictures (about a month earlier than our actual engagement, but that's a story for another day...) and then created our save the dates and other wedding related propaganda ;) these pictures are some of my most cherished and favorite pictures of us together. love you sister!
here's a peek at some of your (and your then fiancé's) amazing work from back in the day (nov 2008 to be exact) ... there are a lot, it was too hard to decide which i like the best :)
like what you see? here are some more recent ones. jason and i had the amazing privilege to visit my sister and brother-in-law this summer in virginia beach. they were amazing hosts and showed us a great time! if you need a vacation spot, i highly recommend the havenner's place in va beach. :) in the midst of all the fun, they found time and inspiration to help jason and i document our first pregnancy journey. so here are some shots from that time, again... there are a lot.
18 weeks and in the middle of my second trimester.

baby-mooning & 31 weeks
we are about to finish 31 weeks of pregnancy. with 2 months to go before we get to meet our little bambino, we decided now was as good of a time as any to take one final trip. a baby moon, if you will. we had a three day weekend from school and a recommendation from friends to see Rio Dulce, Guatemala. it was described as chill, comfortable, beautiful and relaxing. what more could an tired, often crabby and increasingly uncomfortable, 8 month-pregnant lady want? right?! if you're ever traveling through guatemala, El Tortugal in Rio Dulce is a must stop! check it out... we were able to stay in la casita elegante, truly elegant.
here we are after our 5-ish hour long bus ride happy and ready to see the rest of Rio Dulce...our "lancha" (river taxi) was about to show up and whisk us away to river paradise
la casa elegante...elegant is an understatement. this was truly natural, eco-friendly, river-lodge...yet comfortable and classy!
our relaxing river stroll along the Rio Dulce to see a castle/fort from the 1500's
here's jason enjoying the view from the highest point of the castle

and now some updates all about bambino...Cambios y Noticios
It's been quite the trend lately, but bambino has grown quite a bit! He/she is between 18-19 inches long and over 3 pounds (imagine the weight of holding four large oranges). Our doctor measured our little kicker's foot, and it's quite long already. He said bambino's length is close to what we'll see on d-day, and from now on he/she is going to start packing on the pounds. goodness.
Another constant. the moving. this baby is quite the kicker. we've been blessed with a pretty steady show of flipping, kicking, punching and swimming. my stomach has also been showing off some pretty strange shapes as well. one of my students explained during class this past week, "miss! what's happening to your stomach!?" :) it feels like we (bambino and i) are on a constant stage now. a lot of staring, touching my stomach and "como estan los dos?" (how are you two doing?) questions are daily reminders (as if i needed any) of this pregnancy and soon to be birth day for bambino.
how am i feeling? well a lot more of the same. it's hard to find a part of my body that isn't feeling the pressure, strain and added weight of pregnancy. i've gained 26 pounds so far and it feels like it constantly pulling down on my ever-growing belly. i've been suffering from a couple different bacterial infections the past couple of weeks, and am on my second round of antibiotics trying to kick it. i'm fundamentally against antibiotics and had high hopes to be 100% natural in this process. my doctor (and mom) assured me the antibiotics were necessary to attack the infections and the consequences of the bacteria growing and spreading were far more dangerous than fighting the infections with antibiotics. as far as we know, and from all of our appointments, this baby is quite healthy. it's a miracle really.
i was reminded this week in light of a serious pregnancy scare my friend experienced, just how fortunate we are in this process. i've hoped and waited for years for the blessing of pregnancy. medically speaking, the messages i had been given about the chances of a healthy pregnancy (if at all) were unlikely at best. from the moment we learned we may be pregnant, we accepted the news with a lot of joy and an equal amount of reservation, and even a little fear. from appointment to appointment and week to week, we prayed and hoped and crossed our fingers that we would hear good news. now, 31 weeks in, i have already forgotten what that felt like. i no longer walk into dr. bueso's office reserved and nervous, while holding my breath until we hear that heartbeat. today, i'm given the gift of assurance of what is unseen. god has strengthened my faith amazingly through this. my faith, however, was shaken this week when we heard the scary and uncertain news of my friend. thankfully, today we know that her treatment is working and she'll likely experience a full term pregnancy and deliver a very healthy baby. the blessing in this for me is that i am reminded of the grace and provision god has lavished upon our little growing family. i am reminded of my need to express regular and authentic gratitude to god for all that he gives, good or bad, whether we understand what he gives or not. i am reminded that i need to embrace and enjoy each step in this process. we are never guaranteed the end, the result we dream about and plan for. all we know for sure is that when we commit our hearts and our wills to the glory of god, he will work all things for our good. he is sovereign. in that i am sure. i will love, honor and thank him in all things and through all circumstances. so as our due date quickly approaches, we recognize the sacredness of this pregnancy and of all pregnancies. the gift of new life is one only god can provide. so we offer this child, born or unborn to the will and protection of he who can give and take away and remain completely holy and good, true to his promise of grace.

27 weeks down... one more trimester to go
i waited and waited to see the movie "what to expect when you're expecting". i waited mostly because it seemed cliche, and also because movies in Honduras are quite the hot commodity. well, the waiting ended this past weekend, and i'm sure glad i went ahead and watched. the movie follows the experiences of several "expecting" women throughout their journey of becoming mothers (and fathers). the adoption storyline was the most emotionally moving for me, as i am hoping and waiting alongside my best friends who are in their own "expecting" process of adoption. the movie also poked fun at the less than glamorous sides of pregnancy, which i am learning more and more about with each passing week. i was entertained. but, what was most meaningful for me was watching how quickly a woman becomes a mother, how quickly a couple becomes a family. all it takes is the addition of a child. the child growing inside me is teaching me so much about expectation, the process of expecting him/her to become a part of our couple-dom, our new family. i am thinking so much more about the changes that will so quickly be upon us. how we'll need to care for this little one 24/7 and i am overjoyed. as the second trimester of pregnancy comes to a close, we welcome the third trimester with open arms. we are that much closer to meeting our little bambino/a. how our hearts can be filled with even more love than they already are is real mystery. we can't plan for the life changes, but don't you worry...i'm trying ;) all we can do is wait, and expect and wait some more.

Cambios y Noticias:
You have grown a lot, again! You have more than tripled in size during the second trimester. You weigh over 2 pounds and are longer than 15 inches. You, little one, are especially long. Your femur is measuring a full week and half more than the average bambino en-uturo. I'm sure those long legs will come in handy, whether you're a boy or girl, and we look forward to tickling them soon!
The way that Dr. Bueso measures you will change at our next appointment. No more head to rump measurements, now it's time to measure from head to toe!
You're quite the mover. I'm supposed to keep a kick count every day, three times in the morning, noon and at night. Well, don't you worry. You more than surpass the minimum. No surprise there! Your moving has become so intense that it can be seen with the naked eye. I haven't noticed too many weird contortions yet, but it's pretty clear when you're getting yourself comfortable or wanting to communicate your disdain for something I'm doing. Last week sometime I felt a VERY different kind of movement...it was out of nowhere and very strong. Almost like the sensation of dropping off a dollar coaster, when your stomach creeps up into your mouth. Very weird. We saw at our ultrasound appointment last week just what was up. You flipped! You're now "head down", a completed somersault into position. This is where we'd like you to be in about another 13 weeks or so, so if you think about moving around again...just remember to return to this "home-base" position, k?
For me, how am I feeling? What am I NOT feeling is a more appropriate question. :) I'm just entering the third trimester, but already the feeling of pregnancy is heavy, always present and at times quite the nuisance. My back hurts, sciatica, it's hard to sleep, my stomach is heavy and I am TIRED are just a few daily realizations. We're keeping up with exercising: walking, stretching, yoga, elliptical, weight training and pre-natal videos, which all seem to help in the moment. But, I tell ya...it's getting harder and harder to stay motivated to be active. My mind tells me that all I want to do is lay around all day doing, nothing, but my body would certainly disagree. It needs the activity to stay loose and prepare for labor, so I keep at it. Not sure how much longer, though ;)
The name game is still on. It seems unlikely that we'll settle on calling this little Bambino anything other than that until we get the chance to meet him or her. So for now... we all keep waiting.
So many of my friends celebrated their son/daughter's first birthday this month! Happy Birthday to Elisia, Ava, Moriah & Asher! We love you and are so excited to celebrate your 2nd birthdays with you all next year. Congratulations to Violet Bicking and parents! We can't wait to meet you little one and introduce you to your little soon-to-be friend. And, we're waiting still for Jess, Julissa & Margaret's deliveries...so many new lives to come!
bambino's changes from just finding out the news to first trimester queezies, a most wonderful second trimester at home and now one more to go here is hot and steamy honduras :)

reflecting on thirty
yesterday was my 30th birthday. there. said it. not as bad as i thought it would be :) i realized this morning as i was laying in bed attempting to keep sleeping, which is becoming more and more difficult with this little acrobat in my tummy, that my twenties have been bookended by two very life-changing, international experiences. when i was twenty i spent the summer living in what was then the third largest city in the world, sao paulo, brasil with my dear friends, the smoaks. today i am living in the most dangerous city in the world with my darling husband, san pedro sula, honduras. interesting.
i remember distinctly being in brasil and dreaming and planning what my next months and years would bring. i was in the midst of finishing teacher's college and was hoping to teach in an urban, inner-city and hopefully international setting for a couple of years. then, i planned to sell all of my belongings, move across the world somewhere and live among the poor- loving and serving as jesus modeled for me. now, ten years later (oh my goodness!) i'm remembering and reflecting upon those hopes and those dreams. so many people challenged me and shaped who and i am and what i believe in during that short summer.
nason and eliana are/were two beautiful brasilian christians who loved jesus so much that in midst of taking care of their growing family, had enough left over to love on me, too. they gave me impromptu portuguese lessons, shared meals with me, and demonstrated in a simple, daily way how they were choosing to live out their calling as chosen ones. their hearts opened to adoption and their sacrificial work to support Action International's ministry in sao paolo, ABBA, grew. their role as caregivers to street boys soon became guardians and eventually parents. to me, everything they had was treated as a temporary blessing from god to be lavished upon others, and everything they did was intended to bring him honor and praise. i was challenged. how am i lavishing my life upon others from the overflow of your presence in my life?
ruth was another one. she was an international, at that point single, woman who had relocated to one of the favelas (slums) in the city. she ministered to children. she taught them about jesus, washed their clothes, cooked their meals, played games with them, gave them the physical, emotional and spiritual nourishment they were so craving. as i watched her give of herself so selflessly and sacrificially, the small fire burning inside me to do the same was emblazoned. "is that you jesus"? i thought. are you showing me first-hand what i can do for your kingdom as a young, single woman?
of course, i keenly watched thomas and susanna and their children carefully, day in and day out. i remember studying “a purpose drive life” and “the call” that summer. i related and connected much of what i was learning about a well-lived calling, a life lived with purpose to what i was seeing acted out in front of me each day. the ways they selflessly loved their children, without spoiling, and training their hearts to feel deeply and their souls to crave more and more of jesus. the ways they arose early in the morning to train their minds and bodies for the war they were waging against the evils of this world. the ways they thoughtfully made plans to minister to their neighbors, colleagues, family and friends, but would gracefully adapt to a change in plan or routine at any given moment when a need was presented. the ways they did the small things, like dishes and laundry, with a heart of gratitude and thanksgiving. and the ways they poured into me as a friend and eventual extended member of their family. i was changed. in many ways they acted as jesus does for each of us. adopting us into a family of faith, filling us with His love and forgiveness, and then sending us out into the world to represent Him and His ways.
those few, short months started me on a long, arduous journey. a journey in my soul to figure how god was calling to live the life he had given and to live it well. every decision, small and big, contributed to the search i was on in my heart to live in a manner worthy of being called a child of god. how would i spend my free time? with who? where would i live? the city? the suburbs? in another country? how much money should i give away? save? spend? would i marry? who? when? was it really god-honoring to bring my own children into the world when there are millions of other children in need of and waiting for a family to choose them? how should i share the love of jesus with others? through my words? my actions? my gifts of service? these questions are only some of what soon began to plague my mind, relentlessly, after my summer in brasil.
for a while, years maybe, i entertained the questions pretty regularly. i loved reading about “working out my salvation with fear and trembling”, especially since at times those questions did cause me to fear and to tremble. isn’t that what god wanted of me? after finishing college, i was already burned out from teaching “at-risk” kids, and the doubts started. was i really cut out to work with the poor? it was pretty messy. i was called names, heard my first gun-shot and wondered if the grades i gave “jose” would somehow make their way to his “uncle” who would know how to deal with me-the problem. those fears were very real and planted a seed of doubt that grew deep and took root pretty easily. the only thing for me to do was to try and silence the questions that had begun to plague me.
since i’m such a do-er, i sought hard after work that i could find satisfaction in and where i believed god would approve of me spending my time. even in the midst of my persistent pursuits, god moved. working for vericlaim introduced me to dozens of “good” people and brought me closer to my aunt who selflessly lays her life down each and every day for the will of her Father. god showed up in my life during that time and really spoke to me. he challenged me to open my eyes to his hurting world all around me. i remember distinctly receiving this message, “business men and women need Me too”. i wasn’t at vericlaim to take a break from serving him where i thought he was, amidst the poor. He was there. he had already been working in the hearts and lives of a small group of professionals, and i was so privileged to play a small role in sharing the love and grace of jesus in the lives of my co-workers.
during that season my soul was refreshed and i was reminded of my dream to work with “the least of these” and so began my search again. this time my search landed me a little closer to home: warrenville, il. i began working as an after-school program teacher for warrenville youth & family services, in the town i spent twenty years of my life and working the building where i took gymnastics as a little girl. i rubbed shoulders constantly with familiar faces and people from my childhood. for a girl who dreamed of place far and away, this was a challenge and almost like a joke at times. but, i was speaking spanish, loving kids who were pretty messed up, and developing life-long friendships while working in a christian environment. i wonder if i’ll always think this, but for me it was the hardest job on earth. teachers always talk about never receiving feedback or the return for their labor, and i can attest to this. i dodged furniture thrown at me, painfully listened to long rants of insults from the mouths of ten year olds who had already seen more of “life” than i’d ever care to, and dropped off kids for the night in the darkest and foulest of apartments...hoping they would be back the next day. but in the midst of this pain and chaos there were true moments joy. picking up the boys for church each sunday morning. becoming a stable person in the kids and families lives. partnering with other agencies and schools to bring better opportunities for the kids in warrenville. and those life-changing friendships. odell’s words were a constant anchor for me, he let me struggle with the whys and hows of what we were doing in that hard, hard work, and he was always there to remind me of god’s truth and put a positive spin on whatever. wells and i clicked instantly. she was the friend my heart and soul needed. her voice of reason and truth helped to bring light to the dark corners of my mind. she truly understood me and helped me to wrestle with those constant questions, and still does to this day. and of course, at this point in my story enters a friend from my past.
re-establishing contact with jason in my mid-twenties threw quite the curveball into my established life. i had already reconciled myself to the fact that singleness was likely what god had called me to. i was reading biographies of single women, crusaders for christ, and knew that god would give me all i needed for this life and the next. i was strong, independent and ready to conquer the world. i planned to shortly return to international mission work, looking at my time at quest as mere training for something “bigger and better”. but, spending time with jason re-awakened dreams that i had let die out in my heart- dreams to walk through life with a companion, someone who would grow to know me better than i know myself. dreams to create a family of my own, the closest bonds of earthly relationship. dreams to parent and raise children with someone whose strengths were not my own. was it God’s intention to fulfill these desires, buried deep within my heart, in this life and within my relationship with this man? was i selfish, wrong to want these desires fulfilled? or was i simply human, with human desires that- if i trusted God with them- would continue His work of salvation in my life and draw me even closer in communion with Him.
i struggled to work my mind around the years of questions that seemed to only become more and more complicated as time went by. eventually i knew i would need to rely on my faith to see me through. take a step of faith towards this relationship, for now until forever, or take a step away- for good. three and half years later, i am more of my faith-decision today than ever before. when i open my eyes to the hand of God in my life, i see how- for me- a marriage relationship can glorify Him. don’t get me wrong. there have been moments of pain, agony really, over the decision to give of myself selflessly and completely to the needs of this man and the work of building a companionship. there have been even more moments of incredible pleasure and enjoyment as we, the two, are learning to become one. but what i see clearly now, as i am looking for meaning in the past decade and direction for the next, is that in the same way i chose to commit my forever to jason, God has chosen to use this relationship to widen my perspective of Himself, to lavish HIs love upon me in ways never before imagined, and to challenge my mind, my heart and my actions to always seeking first the heart and the ways of God. thanks be to Him.
today i am thirty. i live in the murder capital of the world. i teach the wealthiest kids in the country- soon to be leaders of this hurting and crumbling nation. and i walk past nameless faces in despair on the way to the corner store. i have strived in the past year to develop relationships of trust and mutual benefit with other international teachers, privileged hondurans, and the few poor, working hondurans we lived in close proximity with. i hope i don’t always remember my time this way, but for now, the relationships hurt. as soon as i feel progress is being made, disappointment sets in. i feel forgotten, left out and violated. we have been lied to, stolen from and judged on countless occasions. my efforts to love have been mis-understood and taken advantage of. i can feel the seed of bitterness taking root. doubt has crept back into the crevices of my mind. who was i to think that my small insignificant life, my thankless job and my naive desires to live amidst a forgotten people would ever make a difference? is this really a life lived in pursuit of God? do my efforts count for anything? am i glorifying Him in my words, deeds and lifestyle? honestly, the only answer i can come up with is no. but, what can i expect from people? aren’t i just the same? don’t i leave God out of my own life more often than not? don’t i misinterpret His ways as mistakes or unjust. haven’t i forgotten to first love Him, forsaking all else?
so now what? a decade of striving to live a life worthy of His gospel and to discover His true calling in my life, and where does that leave me? still striving. i just finished reading one thousand gifts, by ann voskamp. through her own personal and challenging circumstances, she tells her story of how she has wrestled with similar questions. how was her small, insignificant life as a farmer’s wife ever going to please and honor God? as i journeyed with her my mind was enlightened to see God’s desires for me differently. has He ever really called me to “do”? i have been “doing” so many things, both with the intention of quieting the questions in my mind and to offer my life in sacrifice to His work. but, have i completely missed what He wants of me? i have been seeking a full life here, but have somehow mistaken that fullness to be accomplishments, things, stuff. the fullness of God cannot be measured by what we do, for ourselves or for HIm. no the fullness of God is demonstrated in the life of Christ during His very short time here.
He lived in constant and ever-present communion with God. communion that was not broken. “remain in Me and I will remain in you” (john 15). the message that inspired me to die to my own desires years ago and will forever remain a visual reminder for me upon my finger. yet, do i remain? i see the example of Jesus remaining in communion with the Father and i recognize my own shortcomings. remaining requires something more than doing, than actions done for the sake of God. or intentions to bring justice to others. or sacrificial, service that leads to disappointment and despair. no, the act of remaining in Him is the better calling. remaining is the birthplace of wisdom. of understanding and accepting one's role as a child of God. remaining is the foundation of love. of giving and receiving love for and from others. remaining is the beginning of grace-filled communion. of constant relationship with God. He truly is all around me. He is in Honduras. in my career as a teacher. He is in my friendships, my family. He is in my relationship with Jason. in my unborn child. He is ever-present in the world surrounding me, waiting to be seen, waiting to be blessed and waiting to invited to remain in me.
so, where does this leave me for the next ten years to come? my questions are still there. how, specifically, do i live a life fully enlivened by the work of Christ in me and for the benefit of those around me? i am discovering that maybe that question will always be with me. maybe God desires that question to be my constant companion, ever spurring me on in righteousness and faith. one thing i can be sure of, though. wherever i am and with whomever i am, the call of God upon my life is to remain always in Him. recognizing His hand of grace. communicating my need for His presence. glorifying Him with my words of gratitude, of thanksgiving.
ann voskamp writes, “communion with God, what was broken in the Garden, that is wholly restored when I want the God-communion more that I want the world-consumption. What that first and catastrophic sin of ingratitude ruptured, what that one bite of the forbidden fruit stole from those fully alive- union- can be repaired by exact inverse of the Garden: lifestyle gratitude and a willingness to eat of the bread He gives in this moment. How badly do I want to return to perfect Paradise, walk with God in the cool of the evening, be fully alive?
1 Thessalonians 5:18 calls me to more than belief in God, we’re called to live in God. opening our lives for Christ to enter in, to remain. in my communion with God, i am called to die to self and to live with in Him. where do i start? i think the starting place is in a lifestyle of thanksgiving. recognizing God as the one true Giver, and rejoicing in anything and all that He gives. naming His presence in the small things, and expecting His hand in the big. remaining in constant communication with Him throughout the moments of joy and trial. looking for His hand to uphold, protect and to guide. communion is work, but the the work of communion produces gratitude and joy. this is the full life that God would have for each of us. how can i offer my life, as a pleasing and holy sacrifice? live it fully in the presence of He who is the giver and rejoice fully in all that He gives.
i remember distinctly being in brasil and dreaming and planning what my next months and years would bring. i was in the midst of finishing teacher's college and was hoping to teach in an urban, inner-city and hopefully international setting for a couple of years. then, i planned to sell all of my belongings, move across the world somewhere and live among the poor- loving and serving as jesus modeled for me. now, ten years later (oh my goodness!) i'm remembering and reflecting upon those hopes and those dreams. so many people challenged me and shaped who and i am and what i believe in during that short summer.
nason and eliana are/were two beautiful brasilian christians who loved jesus so much that in midst of taking care of their growing family, had enough left over to love on me, too. they gave me impromptu portuguese lessons, shared meals with me, and demonstrated in a simple, daily way how they were choosing to live out their calling as chosen ones. their hearts opened to adoption and their sacrificial work to support Action International's ministry in sao paolo, ABBA, grew. their role as caregivers to street boys soon became guardians and eventually parents. to me, everything they had was treated as a temporary blessing from god to be lavished upon others, and everything they did was intended to bring him honor and praise. i was challenged. how am i lavishing my life upon others from the overflow of your presence in my life?
ruth was another one. she was an international, at that point single, woman who had relocated to one of the favelas (slums) in the city. she ministered to children. she taught them about jesus, washed their clothes, cooked their meals, played games with them, gave them the physical, emotional and spiritual nourishment they were so craving. as i watched her give of herself so selflessly and sacrificially, the small fire burning inside me to do the same was emblazoned.

6 months...the ups and the downs
we passed another milestone this week. bambino is now in his/her 24th week, in other words, 6 months old! we are more than half way along, becoming more and more excited, and more and more nervous (mostly me), to meet this little treasure.
i was told countless time to cherish every moment, for they seem to pass all too quickly. there have been many times already when i found that piece of advice to be useless. early on when, no matter what or how much i ate, i felt constantly nauseous, i was hoping the days and weeks would fly by. yet, of course, they crawled. this summer when heartburn seemed to be my constant companion, i found myself asking "how much longer, really?" recently, it's been my sciatica. i finally have true and honest empathy for my sister who has struggled with back pain most of her life. there are days it's seems a physical accomplishment to walk myself up the stairs to bed, without support and without limping. during each of those moments of pain and discomfort, i found myself asking the same question. "when is this going to be over?"
fortunately, i've been blessed with the gift of rosy retrospection, and more often that not, remember experiences far better than they actually were. i quickly forget the pain, the inconvenience and the times of discomfort, remembering instead feelings of happiness, enjoyment and expectancy. my memory has been known to frustrate some, but for me, it's a gift. as i look back on the past 6 months of pregnancy, i remember first the genuine surprise and elation we felt upon learning we'd soon welcome another member into our little, intimate family. i remember the first signs of bodily changes as my shirts hugged a little more snuggly and the belly band was a staple item in my wardrobe. i remember sharing our news with friends and family for the first time, and joining in their excitement and joy. i remember the first moment we saw our little one, just the size of a bean, but already ours and so loved. hearing the heart beating for the first time is something i'll never forget. so loud, and strong, and steady. i remember feeling peace wash over me like a flood, he or she was going to be okay. no matter the baby we are given in a few short months, god was reassuring me in that moment that he was already resting in his righteous, right hand of protection. that first heartbeat set me on a course of learning to trust this most cherished gift in the hands of my creator, the one who willed and wanted it to be (even more than i).
and now? feeling the daily movements of our bambino is a surprise and joy with each and every kick. i feel him/her most in moments of calm, when i'm sitting at my desk at work, no students around, just me and bambino. during church, when we are sitting and absorbing the word and presence of god. at the pool, laying in the sun reading. but mostly at night, as we're laying in bed thinking and talking about the day. it's in those quiet moments together that bambino is the most active. i like to think that he or she wants to be a part of us. wants to listen to and join in our conversation. wants us to remember him or her in those moments of peace. and oh, we do. thanks to my mom, we can hear his/her heartbeat now with her stethoscope, as we feel the movements of kicking and swimming around. i'm even starting to see little wave-like motions that tell me it's only a matter of time now until my stomach starts to put on a little dance show for all to see. safe to say, the changes i've experienced these past 6 months have been nothing short of unbelievable.

You have grown a lot, again! You are now a full one and half pounds, and growing a half of a pound per week. yikes! also, you're about a foot long, equivalent to the length of an ear of corn. it's hard to believe that there's enough room for you in my little oven.
You're fattening up, little by little, and strengthening your organs, bones and muscles each day.
Your face is fully formed, including those little ears we're going to nibble on soon, which can hear just about anything. you already love the sound of your dad's voice. if we haven't felt you move in a while, all we need to do is get your daddy talking and you're sure to give us a little show!
I've started having little cramps, here and there. my doctor told me it's not uncommon to be feeling those braxton hicks contractions this early. also, i'm sure it's getting tight in there, because i can tell when you're trying to stretch out. i'm getting pinched every once in awhile up by my ribs. you're going to be quite the mover and the shaker little one!
A couple of other bodily changes with the bump...i've discovered my linea negra. from what i've read this thin, black line appears vertically down the belly of women who have a darker skin tone. i guess all those days tanning in the sun are affecting me a bit. also, my belly button has started to poke out when i'm laughing. it's only a matter of time now until i'm sportin' an "outie". will my body ever be the same again?
Finally, we are settling on a name little by little. we have a couple of boy choices (first and middle) and now a few girls choices (first and middle). I think it's safe to say we're getting closer to deciding. There's so much that goes into a name. Will he or she truly BE the person we are considering? Will he/she like his/her name? Will he/she appreciate the time and thought that has gone into this process? It's so important to us that the name is full of meaning and identity, so we're carefully deciding. We'll see... :) For now, Bambino it is!

the big move...
which move? you might ask. no... not the move back to Honduras last week. not even the move from casa #1 in colonia universidad to casa #2 in jardines. the big move for us this week was finally being able to feel (me only still, sorry jas) bambino moving around in there! 22 weeks and counting and am being reminded on a daily basis of the beauty and sacred nature of this gift. bambino is healthy. tall, really tall! he/she has a very strong heart beat, sturdy bones and a fully formed spine. we are so fortunate to have experienced a healthy and "average" pregnancy so far, another reminder of god's infinite grace in our lives. our first move, moving back to Honduras from the safety, security and love of our families and friends has been really hard on us this time around. i know that thursday night's second big move, feeling bambino for the first time (for sure!) was intentionally planned and intended by god to encourage our tired and weary spirits and to remind us of His love for each of us. feeling bambino alive and well gave me just what i needed in those moments of loneliness and sadness. one of the reasons we are here is for him or for her. when it's hard to remember the reason for this move, during times of fear and uncertainty, i have another little mover swimming around and helping to right my perspective. we are here for such a time as this. we all are really. no matter our circumstances, they will pass. good or bad, they will pass. no matter the plans we make in our hearts, it is god who we choose to guide our steps. no matter where you are in the world, or where your heart is in the process, may you always look for god moving in your life and be able to experience his grace and love in the big moves and the small.

our next move...look at that kick!
22 weeks of changes.

You have grown SO much the past couple of weeks! You're now the size of a speghetti squash, yow-za! 11 inches long and a full pound.
Your sense's are really developing this week. Taste buds are forming and nerve endings are developed enough for you to experience the sensation of touch. cool!
I am feeling great most of the time. Besides the growing bump, the only other constant reminders are: constant feelings of heartburn and muscle strain in my back, legs and newly found sciatic nerve.
I had what could be my first pregnancy craving (besides a large glass of red wine)... a gooey, baked cinnamon roll. I woke up smelling them and almost did some bodily damage this week at Cinnabon. i stayed strong, though, and tried to ignore the urge to eat out the whole bakery. i'm definitely going to need a large, delicious, warm home-baked, gluten-free cinnamon roll when we get home.
We had the chance to see baby bambino again this week at our ultrasound appointment. We could have found out the gender, but stayed true to our plan. We're very excited for the moment when our doctor says to us in a few more short months, here's your...daughter, or here's your...son! we're loving the pregnancy together and feel it's really bringing us closer as a couple.
